A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME

I’m James and I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist. I obtained my bachelors degree in psychology from the University at Buffalo. With a love for people, their stories, and a passion for wanting to help people through their struggles and alleviate suffering, I obtained my masters degree in marriage and family therapy from Medaille college. My first experience in working as a therapist was at BestSelf where I provided therapy for individuals struggling with mental health concerns. I eventually transitioned to private practice, focusing on work with couples and relational concerns. After completing my license I decided to open my own practice, Therapeutic Insights.

COUPLES THERAPY

“The quality of your life is ultimately determined by the quality of your relationships”-Esther Perel

I’m incredibly passionate about working with couples. Getting to know each of the partners and the dynamics between them and working with them while they grow, and learn, and create change together. I work with couples struggling with a variety of concerns including affairs, communication issues, conflict resolution, domestic violence, navigating transitional periods, and sexual concerns. My clients often describe problems such as: not feeling understood, having the same argument on repeat, not feeling desired, an inability to express their wants and needs, and so much more. If you’re struggling with your relationship, it would be an honor to work with you and your partner to create something different. To set up an appointment please feel free to call or text (716)698-3065 or email jamesthauerlmft@gmail.com

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

“Not everything faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced -James Baldwin

I work with individuals struggling with a variety of concerns including: anxiety, depression, divorce, grief and loss, and low self-esteem. My clients often describe problems like: people pleasing, difficulty setting boundaries and asserting their needs, difficulty getting out of their comfort zone, trusting self or others. If you find yourself wanting help individually or if you find yourself struggling within a relationship but your partner is unwilling to try therapy, it would be an honor to work with you. Please feel free to call or text (716)698-3065 or email jamesthauerlmft@gmail.com

WHAT TO EXPECT IN YOUR FIRST SESSION.

Once you’ve made an appointment, I’ll send a reminder text the day before your session. I’ll ask that you come 10 minutes early to fill out very simple paperwork. I’ll do my very best to make you comfortable. Help yourself to a cold drink. It’s best to think of therapy like we’re just going to have a chat and we’re going to get to know each other. It will be very casual and conversational. I’ll ask questions about the things that bring you in. We’ll discuss goals, strategies you’ve implemented that haven’t worked, and strategies you’ve implemented that may have had some success. We’ll conclude by scheduling your next appointment. In future sessions I’ll work to draw on your own experiences to offer insights and develop tools to implement in the future. We’ll work to understand and recognize long standing patterns and develop strategies for creating new patterns. Sessions are an hour long.
