About
Meet James
I'm James Thauer, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and the owner of Therapeutic Insights. I've been working in private practice for over eight years, and my work centers on one core belief — that things can be different, and that therapy is one of the most powerful tools for getting there.
I specialize in couples therapy and relationship repair, and I also work with individuals navigating anxiety, depression, grief, major life transitions, and more. Whatever brings you in, my goal is the same: to help you understand patterns that may no longer be serving you and build healthier ways of coping, communicating, and relating to others.
My Approach

I'm collaborative by nature. That means therapy with me isn't me telling you what to do — it's us working together toward goals that actually matter to you. My approach draws on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Structural Therapy, and Strategic Therapy, and is always tailored to the individual or couple in front of me.
Clients often describe me as down-to-earth, approachable, and easy to talk to. I take that seriously. Creating a space where you feel emotionally safe, understood, and not judged isn't just something I strive for — it's the foundation everything else is built on.
Background & Training
I received my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University at Buffalo and my Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Medaille College. Before opening Therapeutic Insights, I gained experience working with individuals facing a broad range of mental health concerns, which shaped the client-centered approach I bring to every session today.
